How you hear about a new Open Signal version — the in-app banner and email announcements — and how updating keeps your settings and galleries untouched.
How you hear about a new version
Two ways, both at the service operator’s discretion:
- Email — an announcement with what’s new and a personal download link for your operating system (Windows MSI or Linux tarball).
- In-app banner — a blue bar across the top: “Open Signal x.y.z is available to download”, with What’s new, Download, and a dismiss ✕. Dismissing hides it until the next launch.
The app checks quietly after startup; the banner only appears when the service says a newer version is offered to you — versions can be rolled out gradually, so a friend seeing the banner before you is normal.
Updating
- Click Download (banner) or the link in the email.
- Run the installer. It replaces the old version in place — settings, galleries and log are untouched (they live in your profile folder, not the install folder).
- Launch. The status log’s startup line confirms the build you’re now on.
On Linux: unpack the new tarball over (or beside) the old folder and run it — your files live in ~/.config/OpenSignal and carry over.
Something in an update not right?
The update email includes a Report a problem link — it knows your callsign and files a ticket with us directly, and you’ll get a ticket number and email updates until it’s dealt with. That’s the fastest route; use it freely.
